By contrast, the pale, creamy sapwood intensifies the darker striping, allowing the heartwood’s dramatic character to stand front and center.

But what surprises many craftsmen is how well it behaves in the shop.
Despite its density, Goncalo Alves turns and carves remarkably well. It machines cleanly, sands beautifully, and holds cutting edges exceptionally well. And its naturally high luster accepts finishes easily, often producing an almost glass-like appearance with minimal finishing effort.
